UM Researcher Acknowledged for Contributions in the Field of Parasitology

Prof. Dr. Suresh Kumar P Govind of UM was conferred the Dr. S. C. Parija Oration Award 2016 during Tropical Parasitology Conference (TROPACON) 2016.

Prof. Dr. Suresh Kumar P Govind from Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya (UM) has been awarded the Dr. S. C. Parija Oration Award by the Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology (IATP) for his outstanding contribution in medical parasitology. The award was presented by Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor (I/C) Prof. Anisa Basheer Khan on 4th November 2016 in Chennai, India.

This is a prestigious award given by IATP every year to eminent parasitologists from India or abroad in recognition of their contributions to the field of parasitology. Prof. Suresh Kumar was selected based on his 25 years of unwavering commitment towards elucidating all aspects of the protozoan parasite Blastocystis.

Parasitology experts who attended the conference also raise issue over the rise of drug-resistance in parasitic diseases, especially malaria, which continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in India. The experts have called for more research for better diagnostic, curative and preventive protocols for a spectrum of parasitic infections which are of public health importance in India.
