18 May 2017, SINGAPORE – Now in its 5th annual edition, Innovators Under 35 Asia is the region’s top award for young innovators in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.
Since 1999, MIT Technology Review has honoured the young innovators whose inventions and research we find most exciting with an annual list of young innovators from across the globe: 35 Innovators Under 35. There are now seven regional editions of Innovators Under 35, including Asia. This list recognises technologists and scientists, all under the age of 35, whose work spans respond with biomedicine, computing, communications, energy, materials, internet, transportation, and is changing our world. Since 2014, MIT Technology Review has recognized 40 innovators in Asia.
The 10 selected innovators for 2018 will present a three-minute elevator pitch at EmTech Asia and will become finalists for the global 35 Innovators Under 35 list. The global list is celebrated in the fall of each year at the MIT Media Lab in Boston. MIT Technology Review also showcases this list in the September/October issue and online at www.technologyreview.com/tr35.

Dhesi Raja, who made it to the 2017 list, secured funding for his startup, Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology (AIME), right after his three-minute elevator pitch at EmTech Asia. “Emtech Asia - and Singapore - is definitely the next hub after Silicon Valley that you want to be part of, where great minds meet. Besides the mind blowing convergence of technology, engineering, medicine and entrepreneurship, a vast network of investors has also enabled us to verbally secure a deal worth S$200,000, just after a three minute pitch. Yes! This is the next valley! Singapore valley!”
For Darren Siau Chen Chian, Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore, and an expert in earthquake engineering, being listed in 2016 was an avenue to get closer to the international research and business community. Dr Chian said, “If you would like to be exposed to the international research and business community, Innovators Under 35 is the avenue to get you closer. Being on the list would add credibility to future research grant sponsors.”
Nominees must be under the age of 35 as of 1 October 2018. They must be citizens of (or work/study in) one of the following countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. Submit your nominations now!
