2017 Malaysian Concrete Canoe Competition

The Malaysian Concrete Canoe Competition (MCCC) 2017 was held on 25th and 26th November. The event aims at creating opportunity for civil engineering students to gain hands-on experience in innovative concrete mix designs. During the event, the longest concrete canoe was built and has been registered in the Malaysia Book of Record.

The Malaysian Concrete Canoe Competition (MCCC) 2017, which was co-organized by American Concrete Institute – Malaysia Chapter (ACI – Malaysia Chapter), University of Malaya (UM) and Concrete Society Malaysia (CSM), took place at UM’s Varsity Lake. The event was officiated by Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Datuk Wira Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah.

MCCC created opportunity for civil engineering students to demonstrate innovative design and leadership skills. This event also acts as a platform to bridge the connection between practitioners, students and industry leaders with general public, and to raise awareness of the versatility of concrete as construction material. Participants of the event included teams from University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and University College of Technology Sarawak (UTCS). The main challenges for the participants were to build concrete canoes by adhering to the stringent rules and regulations which can withstand the test of floating when submerged in the water. The canoes were used in the men’s and women’s endurance races, the men’s and women’s sprint races and the co-ed sprint race.

The longest concrete canoe was registered in the Malaysia Book of Record by the ACI - Malaysia Chapter committee.

“Poseidum”, the University of Malaya Concrete Canoe Team, led by Leong Geok Wen won the overall first place, bringing home cash prize of RM 20,000.00 and trophies. In addition, the team also received five special awards in the competition including Best Oral Presentation, Best Canoe Design and Innovative Awards, Best Finishing, Best Women Sprint Race and Best Women Endurance Race.
