QU enters for the first time the QS World University Rankings 2018 by Subject

Ranked among the top 400 universities in the Electrical Engineering subject.

Qatar University (QU) has entered for the first time the QS World University Rankings 2018 by Subject, where the University has been ranked among the top 351-400 universities in the world and fifth in the Arab world after Saudi universities in the Electrical Engineering subject. The announcement was made on the QS website on February 28, 2018.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the world’s top universities in individual subject areas, covering five broad subject area -- Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences -- and 48 specific subjects as of 2018. Two new specific subjects have been added this year -- Classics & Ancient History, and Library & Information Management. QU scored in 26 out of the 48 subjects, which is a guarantee that the University will achieve more subject entries in future rankings. The results also underline the excellent scores previously recorded by QU in the Times Higher Education and Shanghai rankings by subject.

The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their chosen field, with the list of subjects extended each year in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons. 1130 institutions from 151 countries have been evaluated for the 2018 edition.

Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources. The first two of these are QS’s global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess institutions’ international reputation in each subject. The second two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject. These are sourced from Elsevier’s Scopus database, the world’s most comprehensive research citations database.

Commenting on this achievement, Dr Hassan Al Derham, said: “Qatar University has been advancing well in all rankings over the past few years, and in this particular case, we are proud of our position that witnessed substantial improvement as the University has entered for the first time the QS World University Rankings 2018 by Subject. This achievement aligns with the institution’s vision to provide high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare competent graduates, destined to shape the future of Qatar. We are happy with this news and we look forward to improving our positioning among the top universities in the world.”
QS Intelligence Unit Regional Director -- Middle East, North Africa & South Asia Mr Ashwin Fernandes said: “It is absolutely encouraging to see Qatar University make a debut in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 edition which is released today. They have featured for the very first time in the subject -- Electrical & Electronic Engineering, amongst the top 400 universities in the world. QU has also shown steady progress in other subject areas which are a good base for future ranking of QU. I wish to congratulate the faculty and administration for this feat.”
