The Search for Innovators Under 35 in Asia Pacific is ON

For the first time, nominations are extended to innovators in Hong Kong in addition to innovators in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan

21 May 2018, SINGAPORE – The Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific is announcing its open call for nominations for the most promising young innovators under the age of 35 in the region. In its 6th year, the search for the next class of Innovators under 35 Asia Pacific has now expanded to Hong Kong. Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific is the region’s top award for young innovators in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan.

Fifty young Innovators Under 35 have been honoured since EmTech Asia was established in 2014. From this group, four went on to receive global honours, leveraging the exposure from the award to excel in their chosen field. Past global honourees include Gang Wang (2017). A Nanyang Technological University associate professor at the time of his award, Gang recently joined Alibaba’s Artificial Intelligence lab. He was one of the scientists behind Tmall Genie, Alibaba’s first AI-based product, released in July 2017. Analogous to Amazon’s Echo, the device can make purchases on Alibaba’s shopping sites and perform other tasks, such as playing music and checking calendars through voice commands.

“It was a great honour to be listed as one of the Innovators under 35 by MIT Technology Review. EmTech Asia is an incredible platform that delivers inspiring ideas and has tremendous support from the global innovation community. I am working on biomedical devices of patient-derived models for direct detection and evaluation of diseases, and this scene has opened up many opportunities for me as well as the other honourees," said Dr Khoo Bee Luan (Innovator Under 35 Asia Pacific honouree, 2018). Dr Khoo is part of a team of scientists from the BioSystems and Micromechanics of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) that has developed a novel and robust cancer cell-based assay that could help clinicians to diagnose cancer, monitor the disease state and customise drug therapies for each individual patient.

For another regional honouree, Dr Javier Gomez Fernandez, assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design, being recognised was special because it raised awareness of his innovation to a broader community. “I develop new materials that are inspired by nature and made using the same components as nature. The outreach of Innovators Under 35 enabled many people to learn about our work. Because of this outreach, several people from industrial and academic environments have approached us looking to collaborate and support our work. Innovators Under 35 is a great opportunity to publicise your work and establish new collaborations.”

Since 1999, MIT Technology Review has honoured the young innovators whose inventions and research we find most exciting with an annual list of young innovators from across the globe: 35 Innovators Under 35. There are now regional editions of Innovators Under 35 all around the world, including in Asia Pacific. The lists recognise technologists, entrepreneurs, and scientists, all under the age of 35, whose work is currently or poised to change our world. Honourees are diverse and span the fields of biomedicine, computing, communications, energy, materials, internet, and transportation, just to name a few.

The 10 selected innovators for 2019 will present a three-minute elevator pitch at EmTech Asia and will be considered for the global 35 Innovators Under 35 list. The global list is celebrated in the fall of each year at the MIT Media Lab on MIT’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT Technology Review also showcases the global and regional lists online at www.innovatorsunder35.com.
