USM researcher wins top Water Research Award

Prof Abdul Latif Ahmad from Universiti Sains Malaysia recently won the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for his research into alternative resources of water.

The Council of the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water recently rewarded the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (2nd Award 2004-2006) on the "Alternative (non-traditional) Water Resources" Branch to Prof Abdul Latif Ahmad, a researcher from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Prof Abdul Latif Ahmad wins the prize for his research into treatment and re-use of wastewater.

This international scientific prize is a significant contribution from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the global water issues which represent one of the most pressing human, economic and politic concerns worldwide. Prince Sultan Research Center for Environment, Water and Desert incorporates the General Secretariat of the prize.

The Prize is a periodic international scientific award, bestowed every 2 years in appreciation for the efforts and research carried out by scientists and scientific and applied organisations in the sector of water worldwide. It is granted in appreciation of their outstanding achievements which have contributed to the discovery of scientific solutions to the problems of provision of usable water, overcoming its scarcity and assuring its continual availability, especially in arid regions.

The prize is financed by Hi Royal Highness Price Sultan Bin Abdulaziz. It comprises five branches and consisting of a monetary award in the amount of 500 000 Saudi Riyals (about USD 133, 000) for each of the five branches. Each branch is bestowed in recognition of an intellectual or material production, whether of individuals or institutions, which results in the advance of human knowledge, as well as raising the level of human awareness and control in the following areas

- Surface Water
- Ground Water
- Alternative (non-traditional) water resources
- Water resources management
- Protection of water resources
