Book – “My journey to a life of Neurosurgery”

This book presents the general neurosurgery problem-based learning that combines case studies and pathology illustration in a simple and easy to understand way. The book is currently published in Mandarin and is hoped to be translated to other languages in the near future.

Associate Professor Dr. Sia Sheau Fung, Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon, studied his medicine at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and did his Master of Surgery at University of Malaya (UM). He became a member of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2003. Trained in Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery and completed his Fellowship from Sydney Spine Surgery and Dalcross Adventist Hospital, Sydney. Dr Sia is a member of the Academy of Surgical Educators, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), Malaysian Society of Neurosciences (MSN) and Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia (NAM). He is an associated member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. He completed his Ph.D in cerebrovascular surgery at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University, Sydney. His special interests are principally in cerebrovascular and adult complex spine, including degenerative spinal disease and minimally invasive spinal technologies.

It has been 20 years since Dr. Sia graduated from medical school. There are so much works and it’s easy to get so wrapped up in fixing our own life and work that we forget about helping others. And whilst it’s important to put ourselves first sometimes, it’s even more important to help others in need.

Dr. Sia thought it would be stimulating and meaningful to write and share about his dream, life, and work experience with the world in this book “My Journey to a Life of Neurosurgery”.

Dr. Sia has been an active community volunteer and he wants to bring a positive impact to community and help the unfortunate. Being a community volunteer has helped him to understand the depth of life even more than before. Life is full of imperfections but it is our imperfections that make us unique.

There is currently no general neurosurgery problem-based learning that combines case studies and pathology illustration presented in simple and easy to understand languages. This book is intended for all general readers with varying levels of knowledge.

Dr. Sia brought a wealth of problem based learning through this book and is pleased to have the opportunity to share his teaching file complete with high quality images of brain and spine with clinical correlation. He hopes that this book will serve as a frequently referenced learning tool for all levels and be instructive and insightful. Dr. Sia considers his goal achieved if he managed to spark an interest in common neurosurgical problems and contributed to society and improve patient care.

This is the book that could potentially create a positive impact in the local society while also being a useful textbook of neurosurgery for medical students. Currently, the book is only available in Mandarin but Dr. Sia is hoping to get it translated into English and Bahasa Malaysia in the near future. So far, the book has been featured in Sin Chew Daily, Sin Chew Healthcare, and ASTRO AEC Health Program.
