On the occasion of the recent launching of the book Fabián de la Rosa and His Times, the Fabián de la Rosa (1869-1938) Retrospective Exhibition is extended until 28 January 2007. Opened last 7 September 2006, the exhibition is a tribute to de la Rosa's great contribution to Philippine art. It is also a means of introducing him to a younger generation of Filipinos.

The second Director (1926-1938) of the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, de la Rosa is heir to the artistic traditions of Simon Flores, Juan Luna and Felix Resurreción Hidalgo. He was also the first mentor of his nephews Fernando and Pablo Amorsolo. A leading academic painter at the time of worldwide social ferment, revolution and nationalism in the country, his works reflect much of our history. De la Rosa lived and practiced his art through the Spanish and American colonial regimes in the country, and was among the last of the generation of artists influenced by Lorenzo Guerrrero, Miguel Zaragoza, Flores, Luna and Resurreción Hidalgo.

The exhibition includes his artworks loaned from both private and public collections in the country. In addition, several pieces by his predecessors, contemporaries, colleagues and successors are part of the exhibition. Fabián de la Rosa (1869-1938) Retrospective Exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation.

Fabian de la Rosa and His Times , with essays written by Luciano P.R. Santiago, Ana P. Labrador, Santiago Albano Pilar and Macario Ofilada Mina, is now available at the UPVM Shop. It is a joint publication of the UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum & Filipiniana Research Center and Filipiniana.Net, a division of Vibal Publishing House, Inc.
