The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is a non-profit international research center with staff from 45 countries. We have an opening for a Barley Breeder, to be based at the headquarters in Aleppo, Syria.
The Position:
ICARDA has an immediate vacancy for the position of a Barley Breeder (P-level) reporting to the Director of the Integrated Gene Management MegaProject (MP2). The position is based at ICARDA’s headquarters in Aleppo, Syria. The specific responsibilities are as follows:
• Implement the various steps of the breeding program at the headquarters including design of crosses, selection in the segregating populations, organization of trials and data analysis, and the continuous search for more efficient and effective methodologies
• Design and implement breeding trials including the participatory methodology developed by the program
• Develop and implement collaborative research with national-program scientists
• Produce technical reports and training material
• Establish and/or maintain collaboration with centers of excellence to exploit new techniques to screen for traits which are important in determining the adaptation and/or commercial value of barley in the target environments
• Develop research proposals for potential donors
• Represent ICARDA in regional and international fora
• Assist in defining the objectives of the MP2 Program
• Keep up-to-date on developments in barley breeding and carry out and publish appropriate research in barley breeding
• Prepare records, etc. as requested
• Participate in appropriate training programs
• When appropriate, prepare submission for outside funding
• Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
• PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics or related subject and/or considerable demonstrated ability in appropriate field
• At least 5 10 years experience in plant breeding, preferably barley
• Fluency in English
• Managerial and supervisory skills
• Ability to plan and conduct research and interpret research results
• International experience in agricultural development
• Knowledge of barley worldwide required
• Computer skills
