National Media Development Center's activities for journalists

The activities include Media Treks to the Everest base camp for international journalists, training programmes for active journalists and basic journalism training in radio.

National Media Development Center (NMDC) was established to help empowerment the provincial media in Nepal.NMDC is fully dedicated to the establishment and promotion of a free media as the foundation of democracy and pluralism. To establish what is needed, NMDC officials visited journalists and media houses of 17 districts to identify the needs. After that it designed some major activities needed for the year and raised the funds for its implementation.

Upcoming Activities for 2007:

3 DAY TRAINING PROGRAMS - The NMDC organized 3-day training programs in 14 zones on: "Democracy, Constituent Assembly Election, Roles and responsibilities of Journalists in Civic and Voters' Education" for the active journalists of Nepal. Almost 500 journalists and editors of in 75 districts are expected to attend.

BASIC JOURNALISM TRAINING IN RADIO - The NMDC also plans to organise Basic Journalism Training in radio at the district level in the remotest districts of Nepal. The course will be 5 days long.

MEDIA TREKS TO THE EVEREST BASE CAMP - NMDC has planned to organize media treks to the journalists around the world in coming autumn to Everest Base Camp/ Kalapather, 5550m. and Thorong -La Around Annapurna 5300m two weeks and Annapurna Base Camp Trekking 4200m.

NMDC the only organization in Nepal is proud to lead on Health Journalism as well as specialized HIV/AIDS reporting, Economic and Water resource reporting trainings to the provincial journalists of Nepal. Nepal is a land of abundance opportunities with diverse nature, culture, and ethnicity.

The following is an account of NMDC's recently completed activities.

Celebration of World Press Freedom Day, May 3 2007: NMDC celebrated the World Press Freedom Day (May 3 2007) at Palpa, West Nepal in coordination with district media organizations. A half-day interaction program was organized on the need of free and fearless media for democracy.
Constituent Assembly and Media Responsibility Training. NMDC organized a three-day training program from 3-5 May 2007 at Palpa, to 32 journalists of 5 different districts, supported by Department of Information, Similarly, in cooperation with Frederic Ebert Stiftung (FES) Nepal it organized a 2-day Training/Seminar to 57 journalists of 6 different districts on 13-14 June 2007. The program was organized on “Initiatives for Democracy Building: Roles & Responsibilities of Journalists in Voters and Civic Education”. We gave high priority to the journalists from- women, Dalit, ethnic minority. The program at Kathmandu was inaugurated by Honorable Speaker of the Legislature Parliament of Nepal, and chief of other media organizations also addressed the session.
