Bumi - Gemilang Biotechnology (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad and Universiti Teknologi MARA to commercialize 7 research products

Selangor, Malaysia - In conjunction with this collaboration, BGBSB would set up a BGBSB – UiTM Research & Development Centre to provide facilities for UiTM researchers to improve and enhance the quality of research products especially products which are biotechnologically related.

Institute of Research, Development and Commercialization Bumi - Gemilang Biotechnology (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad and Universiti Teknologi MARA to commercialize 7 research products Despite the challenges public institutions of higher education face in commercializing research products, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Bumi – Gemilang Biotechnology (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad (BGBSB) has taken aggressive initiatives with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement to commercialize 7 UiTM’s research products.

These products are Bacterial Embedded Oil Spill Absorber, Production of Fertilizer From Leachate, Septic Tank Treatment, Odour Management and Oil, Grease and Food Interceptor from Faculty of Chemical Engineering, research done by Prof. Dr. Ku Halim Ku Hamid. Two other products are Night Blooming Jelly (Dragon Fruit) and Bitter Gourd Crackers from Faculty of Hotel Management & Tourism, research done by
Mrs. Saidatul Afzan Abdul Aziz and Mrs. Norfezah Md. Nor.

A soft launch ceremony, in conjunction with the signing of the Joint-Venture agreement between UiTM and BGBSB was held on the 27th of March 2007 at PNB Darby Park, Kuala Lumpur. UiTM was represented by Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Seri Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Abu Shah while Major (R) Haji Ahmad Nazri Dato’ Dr. Haji. Mohd Eusoff, Executive Chairman represented Bumi – Gemilang Biotechnology (Malaysia) Sendirian Berhad UiTM’s Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Seri Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Abu Shah said that it is vital for public institutions of higher education to get full support from the industries in order to successfully commercialize research products or the resources spent on research, inventions and innovations would be wasted. In conjunction with this collaboration, BGBSB would set up a BGBSB – UiTM Research & Development Centre to provide facilities for UiTM researchers to improve and enhance the quality of research products especially products which are biotechnologically related. The company would also
provide career opportunities and scholarships to deserving UiTM students. It is hoped that this joint venture marks a new beginning of which stronger ties between the industry and public institutions of higher education would be forged to realize the nation’s ambitions of becoming a world class centre for research and development.
