USM to set up campus overseas

Penang, 4 Aug - Universiti Science Malaysia (USM) is planning to set up a campus abroad which focuses on offering post-graduate courses.

Universiti Science Malaysia (USM) is planning to set up a campus abroad which focuses on offering post-graduate courses.

Its vice chancellor Prof. Dzulkifli bin Abdul Razak said the university was seriously studying the matter as it offers them a chance to recruit more foreign students, particularly those who have problems continueing their studies in Malaysia.

He said the plans might materialise next year. The University is currently having discussions on its implementation. The suggestion is to establish the campus in a developing country.

Prof. Dzulkifli told a press conference, after delivering his welcome message to 975 new students in USM Penang recently.

He said the move was important to promote USM internationally, by increasing the number of students from various countries. It would also help students who are interested and qualified, to pursue their studies in USM.

USM has a total of 6,687 students in various courses at the three campuses, out of which more than 1,400 of them are foreign students from about 60 countries.

This year, USM also launched four new master degree courses. They are Master of Science in River Management, Master of Science in Techno-Information Technology Entreprenuership, Masters Degree in Business Administration (International Business) and Masters Degree in Advanced Medicine (Neurology).

Prof. Dzulkifli said USM was also planning to set up a centre to pioneer some economic-based studies.
