CAPUL, PALINGNGA KAW?
A PHOTOETHNOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT BY FRANCISCO A. DATAR
10 July to 27 October 2007
The Landing Gallery, 3/F, Jorge B. Vargas Museum
Roxas Ave., U.P., Diliman

The U.P. Jorge B. Vargas Museum & Filipiniana Research Center opens Capul, palingnga kaw? at the
Landing Gallery, 3/F on 10 July 2007 (Tuesday) at 5pm. The exhibition will feature photographs
taken by anthropologist Francisco A. Datar during the course of his fieldwork at, as well as some
ethnographic materials loaned from the island-town of Capul in Northern Samar.

Strategically located at the entrance (or exit) of San Bernardino Strait, what the Spaniards called the
Embocadero, this island is the last galleon stop before sailing to the Pacific, and the first stop coming
in. The name Capul, according to local oral history, is an abbreviated form of Acapulco. Capul, palingnga kaw? (literally translates to Capul, where are you going?) shows the Abaknon of today as influenced by three local cultures — Abaknon, Agta and Waray — and the early Spanish presence in the island (the Capul church is one of the earliest churches built in the country), creating a culture distinctly separate from the surrounding islands of Bikol and Samar. Their uniqueness as an ethnolinguistic group will be featured in the photographs that comprise images of physical structures in Capul and activities of its people, the Abaknon. Complementing these is a display of objects used in everyday activities of the community.

Datar's 6th solo show, Capul, palingnga kaw? will run until 27 October 2007. The show is sponsored by Fujifilms – YKL Color Laboratories. For more information and pictures, please call Linda at 928-1927, or email us at [email protected]. You may also reach us through 09198151996 / 09274198533.
