[Synthetic Organic Chemistry Directed toward Materials Science]
1. Overview
RIKEN is accepting proposals for Initiative Research Unit (IRU) projects for FY2007. The Initiative Research Unit Program was established in FY2001 to afford opportunities to superior young researchers as unit leaders to develop new fields of research and to encourage the cultivation of top grade researchers.
2. Research Field
We are currently seeking a researcher with experience in the field of synthetic organic chemistry directed toward materials science.
3. Laboratory Location and Space
This laboratory is to be established at RIKEN's Wako campus in Saitama, Japan. In general, each initiative research unit receives about 100m2 of laboratory and office space.
4. Prospective Applicants
Applicants should be young researchers who possess a doctoral degree in a natural science and a record of outstanding achievement, and will be expected to propose a research plan which he or she will be able, as unit leader, to carry out at the RIKEN Wako Campus. They should have sufficient research experience to enable them to put forward an ambitious research plan and to independently manage a research unit toward its goals. Applicants must be able to work in this capacity at RIKEN on a full time basis.

One year, annually renewable up to a total of five years; contract will begin March 1, 2008.
7. Features of this System
(1) The Initiative Research Program unit leader is responsible for organizing a team of several researchers or technical personnel and leading them as a unit toward specific research goals.
(2) The unit leader may elect to receive advice and support from an advisor or mentor in RIKEN in regard to setting up the unit as well as its management and operation. RIKEN will assist in the selection of an advisor from a list of candidates provided by the unit leader.
(3) An evaluation of the progress of the unit toward its goals is generally conducted by RIKEN after the third year of the unit's operation, and once again toward the end of the five-year research term.
(4) The unit is encouraged to take maximum advantage of the RIKEN research environment, including common equipment and facilities, creating collaborative relationships, applying for competitive grants, etc.
8. Remuneration, Allowances and Research Budget, etc.:
Salary: 10.9 million yen/year (pre-tax); commuter and housing allowances provided per RIKEN regulations.
Research budget: 38.5 million yen/year, from which the unit leader is expected to recruit and hire several research and technical staffers. The first year's budget may be supplemented with 10 million yen as startup funds.
