The event was officially launched by the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, who was accompanied by his wife, Datin Nafesah Raja Nong Chik. Also present were FRIM Director General (DG) Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod and The Star Group Chief Editor Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
At a press conference after the launching, the Minister urged all Malaysians to contribute to efforts to conserve the environment. He also pledged that the Ministry will work with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to safeguard the remaining green lungs in the city by discouraging any further development from taking place in such areas.
Meanwhile, Dato’ Dr Abd Latif announced the launching of the “Friends of FRIM” campaign, in line with its effort to enhance environmental awareness amongst the younger generations as well as to promote a sense of ownership, belonging and care for FRIM as a natural heritage.
FRIM has been gazetted a natural heritage site under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) on 10 February 2009.
The DG also disclosed FRIM’s plans to encourage more members of the public to participate in its tree planting and adopt a tree programmes.
Various activities carried out during the Green Fest celebration from 8.00am to 3.00pm including car boot sale, guided tour to the various nature trails and canopy walkway in FRIM, tree climbing demonstration, face and t-shirt painting, and colouring contest for children.
Among others, artistes such as Farah Asyikin, Fazli Zainal, Azharina and Akademi Fantasia 5 participant Aizat were there entertained the crowd alongside TV3 personalities including Karam Singh Walia, Shahida Azad Jamaludin, Gina Woon and Sasha Bashir who made their special appearances in support of conservation.
