USM has also created history as it is the first public institution iof higher learning in the country to host the Premier League and the FA Cup. Even more interesting is that all the matches will be held in the later part of the evening, starting at 8.45pm.
The FA Cup match for USM FC will begin on Tuesday, 2 February 2010 at 8.45pm at the USM Stadium, USM, Penang. The match between KBSSUSM and the Terengganu team is expected to be a very intense game.
Mohd. Azizudin Mohd. Sharif, the USM Staf Football Club (KBSSUSM) team manager said that the team will compete under the name USM FC to indicate the involvement of the entire USM campus community.
“Both these matches are crucial as they will be the yardstick used to measure USM FC’s capability to compete in the Premier League and FA Cup. Besides this, it will also draw the support of football fans especially the campus community to solidly back the USM FC team throughout the competition. Compared to other teams, we use our own staff and do not rely too much on imported players. USM has already faced Pos Malaysia FC twice in the FAM League Cup 2009 and so we have an idea of how the other team plays,” he said.
He is also expecting very fierce competition in the matches with the five most experienced teams such as the Harimau Muda (Under 21 Malaysian Squad), FELDA United, PKNS Selangor, Malaysian Armed Forces(ATM) and the Royal Malaysian Police(PDRM).
“However, we are confident that we will give our best in every match,” he stressed.
USM will face 12 matches at home (USM Stadium) and another 12 matches away from home territory to qualify for a spot in the Premier League and FA Cup for the 2010 season.
