USM to train network engineers at St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering, India

Universiti Sains Malaysia is the only institution of higher learning in the country that has been selected to help train IPv6 network engineers at St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering (SXCCE), a world-class engineering college in India.

The training programme, offering a Professional Certificate in IPv6 Network Engineering will commence by mid 2010 through the National Advanced IPv6 Centre in USM.

The programme, carried out under the Technology Transfer Programme is part of the continued efforts of National Advanced IPv6 Centre to make USM a training centre for network engineers who, once trained, will develop the IPv6 network technology in India.

According to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal, the collaboration between USM and SXCEE will also expand to include the exchange of students and experts between both parties. The focus of the exchange will be in the area of postgraduate studies especially in fields related to network technology and computer science.

“In USM, the field of engineering is very strong and currently we have seven Schools in this field. It is not impossible that the collaboration between USM and SXCCE will also expand if we discover that there is potential in this field too,” he said.

He said this after signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between USM and SXCCE at the Chancellery Conference Room, USM today.

Prof. R. Sureswaran, the Director of the National Advaced IPv6 Centre acted as the witness for USM while Dr. S. Joseph Sekhar, the Chairman of SXCCE and Prof. Dr. C. John Moses represented SXCCE.

SXCCE which is situated in Kanyakumari, India has a total of 2000 students and more than 145 lecturers in the field of engineering. To date, SXCCE offers six First Degree Programmes as well as six Postgraduate programmes encompassing areas such as Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Communication and Electronic Engineering and others.

Also present were SXCCE Correspondent, Rev. Dr. V. Hilarius and the Deputy Director of the National Advanced IPv6 Centre, Selvakumar Manickam.
