The University of the Philippines at Diliman celebrates International Women’s Month this March. To launch the month-long celebration, the Vargas Museum and the Center for Women’s Studies will mark the International Women’s Day with the opening of the exhibition entitled The Chinese Brush Paintings of Narita Gonzalez on 8 March 2006 at 6:00 pm at the Edge Gallery of the Vargas Museum. It is supported by Anvil Publishing, Inc. and The Frame Company. The exhibit will pay tribute to the unique materials and techniques of Mrs. Gonzalez, and the fine practice of Chinese brush painting in the Philippines.

Three more exhibitions will open at the Vargas Museum on 16 March 2006. In cooperation with the Diliman Gender Office, the exhibits entitled Filipinas by photographer Isa Lorenzo and Relicarios by miniaturist Gregory Raymond Halili will be featured simultaneously at the Kawilihan Gallery at the second floor of the Vargas Museum. Filipinas will travel to the Museum after its successful show at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It features a collection of 30 black and white photographs of a select group of senior women who have made a name for themselves in the fields of arts, education, civil society and politics. On the other hand, Relicarios is an exhibition showcasing a series of watercolor portraits painted on ivory and mounted on relicarios. The formal opening of the exhibitions Filipinas and Relicarios is scheduled at 6:00 pm and will run until 8 May 2006.

The Four Faces of Woman Dance-Exhibit includes a collaboration of four women dancers and four visual artists led by Rina Angela Corpus. This will open at the Edge Gallery also on 16 March 2006 with a dance performance at 7:00 pm. The dance-exhibit is a multi-media presentation using dance pieces and visual arts to highlight the four meaningful phases and faces that women go through in their lives. Another dance performance is scheduled on 17 March 2006. The exhibit will run until the end of the month.

In cooperation with the UP Center for Women’s Studies, a lecture entitled Mentoring Session with Aurora Javate de Dios will be held at the Vargas Museum on 22 March 2006 at 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. The National Commission on the Role of Women (NCRW) former chairperson will lecture on the UN Convention on Elimination and Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

You are all invited to the celebration of the International Women’s Month at the UP Diliman. The exhibitions will be on view from Tuesdays to Sundays, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. For more information, you may contact Ms. Linda Pabico at 9281927 or send an email to [email protected].
