RIKEN invites applications for the position of Chief Scientist to lead a new laboratory working on The Advanced Science Institute (ASI). Applications from overseas applicants are welcome. The successful candidate will be responsible for the laboratory's overall management and research strategy, directing research projects and contributing to more general aspects of RIKEN's management and research planning activities.

The RIKEN Advanced Science Institute (ASI) is applying its integrated and interdisciplinary resources and autonomous atmosphere to strengthen various interdisciplinary research fields. ASI is now planning to establish a laboratory headed by Chief Scientist who is capable of implementing original research in the interface between optical science and nanotechnolgy, to establish functional strategies over the medium and long terms.

The new laboratory is expected to stand at the forefront of optics and nanotechnoloy, e.g. in creating innovative optical material/device, and develop a new research field through merging advanced optical/laser science, atomic/nano-scale material fabrication technology and so forth. To head this new laboratory as a Chief Scientist, ASI seeks an individual with strong research record in relevant fields.

The post is a permanent appointment, subject to RIKEN's mandatory retirement age of 60. However, it is possible, depending on evaluation results, to continue research after the age of 60 (73 maximum) as a Distinguished Senior Scientist. Terms and conditions of employment shall include a director-level salary and be in accordance with RIKEN's procedures for appointing Chief Scientists. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai). RIKEN expects that the successful applicant will be able to take up this position on April 1, 2012.
