UNIMAS Won Excellent Awards at the Geneva International Invention Expo

All the eight products exhibited by UNIMAS at the 34th Geneva International Invention Exposition 5 – 9 April 2006, received awards. Apart from winning 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medals, UNIMAS was the only Malaysian university participant accredited with Special Certificates for Excellent Achievement.

These prestigious certificates were awarded to two of the eight products exhibited by the UNIMAS team. Of the three certificates received, two were for the Easy Wear Patient Attire in Hospital Wards, designed by Dr Nazlina Shaari of the Faculty of Applied & Creative Arts.

The certificates were awarded by the National Authority of Scientific Research of Romania and by the Mayor of Taipei “in recognition of her creative invention which offers notable contribution in improving the quality of family life”.

Apart from receiving these Special Certificates, Dr Nazlina had also won a gold medal for another product called Informative Design on Textiles for the Visually Impaired Persons, a creative design that helps the blinds identify the colour of fabrics.

The third Special Certificate, and a gold medal were awarded to Dr Wang Yin Chai, Narayanan K and Wang Hui Hui of the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology for the Best IT Product. Their product was an application software called Intelligent Image Finder.

Fibreboard Production from Sago Waste using Natural Enzyme, jointly developed by UNIMAS and CRAUN Research, had also won a gold medal. The product demonstrates how sago bark, a waste produced in sago processing, can be cheaply turned into fibreboards instead of disposing (burning) it away. An additional merit for this product is that the binding agent used is not the conventional chemical resins but a very environmental friendly natural enzyme produced by CRAUN.

There were two other sago based products which have also won UNIMAS medals. They were a gold medal for the Productions of Lactic Acid from Sago Starch by Dr Kopli Bujang and a silver medal for the production of Biocomposite Product from Sago Bark waste by Dr Khairul Aidil Azlin and Noorhaizat Sundin.

This year’s Geneva Expo hosted some 680 inventions from over 30 countries. Of these 152 exhibits were from Malaysia, the highest number of entries among the participating countries.
