UPM students organise international seminar

The students of the School of Graduate Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) known as the Peer Support Group (PSG) have organised an international seminar entitled "Managing the Research Journey" to help graduate students conduct an effective research methods.

The director of the PSG, Chang Sui Kiat, said the seminar was attended by 350 graduate students in public higher education institutions (IPTA), and that half of them were international students. The speaker was Dr. Vijay Kumar Mallan from University of Otago, New Zealand, who has extensive experience in student motivation.

"The purpose of this seminar is to instil the habit of a successful research among graduate students, how to manage the thesis, methods of presenting research results at international conferences and preparation for the viva at the end of the study to ensure their employability," he said.

He said that through international collaboration and knowledge sharing with renowned institutions, the University of Otago will help strengthen the internationalization of UPM students and encourage new ideas that are relevant to graduate students.

The seminar was held on 17 - 18 March 2012 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM in cooperation with the International Student Association (UPM-ISA), University of Otago , New Zealand and the Graduate School of the UPM.

The seminar was opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) of UPM, Professor Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris.
The PSG of UPM Graduate School was established in January 2012 to help graduate students deal with issues related to campus life such as accommodation, academic, cultural differences, visa, passport and welfare to assist the smooth management of the university in addition to the registration of new graduate students. It comprises 10 local and international graduate students who have volunteered to take care of fellow graduate students.
