NEW UNIMAS CAMPUS

The Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Bin Hj Ahmad Badawi, officially launched the permanent UNIMAS Campus on the morning of 18 April 2006 (Tuesday) at the University Square.

Work on this new campus began in September 1999 and is on going. In total, the development of this new campus involves two main phases. The first stage of phase one has been completed.

This includes the Chancellery and University House, The Centre for Academic Information Services, The Centre for Information and Communication Technology Services, The Centre for Language Studies, two centres for teaching facilities, three main residential colleges and a total of five faculties. These are the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, The Faculty of Resource Sciences and Technology, The Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development, The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology and The Faculty of Engineering. Presently, The Centre for Academic Information Services, The Centre for Information and Communication Technology Services, The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology and several residential colleges are fully operational. The Chancellery and University House, faculties and centres will be moving soon.

Built with an open concept in mind, those visiting this new campus will be able to enjoy the facilities and services offered which are also disabled-friendly. There is also a network of pedestrian malls and various amenities which offer a campus-in-a-town concept. Plans are also being made to convert two residential college blocks into an “International College” to cater for foreign students. Besides the construction of the main buildings and facilities, there are two water towers and a 40-acre lake which are prominent landmarks in this new campus. With a built-up area of approximately 600 acres, this first stage of Phase One is able to accommodate about 7,000 students.
