Background information on Universiti Utara Malaysia

Universiti Utara Malaysia was established on 16th February 1984 to develop and promote management education. Its academic programmes are geared towards management, accounting, economics, information technology, public administration, human resource management, entrepreneurship, finance and banking, law, marketing, management of technology, communication, social work, multimedia, education, decision science, international affairs, business management, tourism, development management, logistics and transportation, hospitality, risk and insurance management.

Universiti Utara Malaysia acts as a catalyst for development in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. The basic infrastructure, facilities and human resources of the University provide the impetus for all its socio-economic activities.

Besides teaching and research, the University also contributes to the social, economic and intellectual growth of the region. It plays this role by participating in community-based projects, solely or in collaboration with other government agencies and/or the private sector.

The objectives of the University can be summarised into three main aspects, which are:
- To be the centre of excellence for management.
- To be the reference centre in all aspects of management.
- To be the premier resource centre in the field of management.

Universiti Utara Malaysia is an open campus, located in Sintok, 48 kilometers north of Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah, 10 kilometers east of Changlun, a small town on the North-South Highway, and 20 kilometers from Bukit Kayu Hitam, a small town at the Malaysian – Thai border. It is about half and hour's drive away from Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas. The nearest railway station is in Arau, the neighbouring state of Perlis. The 1,061 hectares campus is surrounded by tropical rain forests set against a background of mountains. The Sintok and Badak Rivers run through the campus creating a truly unique feature as well as making it one of the most beautiful campuses in Malaysia. The campus has 107 hectares of forests reserve, a 9-hole golf course, a camping ground, jungle tracks, an archery range and a deer park., which are open to the public. Accommodation is available at the University Hotels and Apartments. Student residential colleges are also available for rent during semester breaks.

Background information on Faculty of Communication and Modern Languages

The Faculty of Communication and Modern Languages (its Malay acronym, FKBM) was established on 1st April 2003. Its main objectives are to provide communication, media technology, and modern language education as well as conduct research and provide consultancy in these field of studies. The faculty is composed of three departments: Department of Communication, Department of Media Technology, and Department of Modern Languages. The faculty offers four postgraduate and two undergraduate degree programmes, viz. MA in Communication, Applied Linguistics, and Contemporary Malay Language Studies, MSc in Managerial Communication, and Bachelor’s degrees in Communication and Media Technology. In addition, the faculty is the main platform for the elevation of the Malay language, enhancement of students’ mastery of English, and acquisition of other international languages such as Spanish, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Arabic, and Thai. The faculty also provides language and communication training to students, individuals, groups and organizational clients.
