According to Japan's Education Ministry data for KAKENHI national funding grants, over the last five years, Waseda University was the top institution in ten research fields, centered in the humanities and social sciences. This is the best among all private institutions, and seventh place when including all national universities and public research organizations.
KAKENHI, also known as Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, is public funding allocated through a peer-reviewed competitive process by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. According to JSPS, “the grants provide financial support for creative and pioneering research projects that will become the foundation of social development.”
Waseda University was first in Education Engineering; Japanese Literature; Chinese Literature; Japanese Language Education; Foreign Language Education; Civil Law; Political Science; Finance; Commerce (Business); and Educational Psychology.
