University of Nottingham pioneers in offering postgraduate Education programme in Sri Lanka

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) has become the first global university to offer MA in Education in Sri Lanka.

The first cohort of students started their first module in April at the Gateway Graduate School in Colombo. Gateway is UNMC's partner in Sri Lanka following a MoU that signed by Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of UNMC and Dr Harsha Alles, Chairman of Gateway Graduate School in 2014.

Assistant Professor Dr Maria Kaparou, an expert in educational leadership and management, kicked off the programme with a module in Leading Learning, which focusses on the contribution of instructional leadership practices for improvement in schools. The module also also serves as professional development for teachers.

At UNMC, the MA in Education has been offered since 2013 to students from this region and beyond, with its graduates employed by leading education institutions worldwide.

Dr Kaparou pointed out that the success of the programme lies in the research-driven sessions drawn from a wide range of educational contexts for insightful discussions.

“The feedback received by our students captured the strengths of the module, while its thought provoking nature encouraged more students’ interactions.”

The programme administrator for the MA Education at UNMC, Lucy Bailey, said, “It was pleasure to travel to Sri Lanka to work with these students. Many of the students are already in educational leadership positions and they had a lot to share with us about education in their nations. They were very enthusiastic about their studies, and it was a privilege to work with them.”

Lecturers from UNMC will continue to deliver lectures in Sri Lanka to ensure that the students will benefit from Nottingham's global education experience. This programme is offered annually during the Sri Lankan school holidays in April and August, with new intake enrolments taking place each December.

In April of 2015, UNMC and the Gateway Graduate School signed another MOU to enable students to start the first year of their Psychology and Management degree in Sri Lanka, with the option of finishing the degree at UNMC.

The School of Education at UNMC provides an exciting and rewarding learning experience with a global view. Committed to providing quality education to students from around the world, the School is a leading centres for research in education and actively contributes to the improvement of social justice and equality in education in the society.
