Prof Mohd Sapuan becomes first Malaysian fellow of the U.S.'s Society of Automotive Engineers

Universiti Putra Malaysia Professor Ir Dr Mohd Sapuan Salit has become the first Malaysian engineer to have been elected as Fellow of the United States’ Society of Automotive Engineers International.

SERDANG, July 7 - Professor Ir Dr Mohd Sapuan Salit, the head of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest products Biocomposite Technology Laboratory, created history when he recently became the first Malaysian engineer to have been elected as Fellow of the United States’ Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE).

The prestigious award is in recognition of his impactful and significant contributions towards community mobility technology through leadership, research and innovation.

About 20 people who are outstanding and excellent professionals from across the globe received the award each year since the inception of SAE Fellow in 1975.

Prof Dr Mohd Sapuan who is also a professor in composite materials at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering received a certificate, a plaque and a distinctive Fellow pin from SAE Malaysia chairman, Encik Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim during SAE 13th Annual General Meeting at Marina Putrajaya on June 26 after he was unable to attend the award presentation ceremony in Detroit, USA.

SAE International is a worldwide association with 138,000 members comprising engineers and technical experts in related fields in automotive, commercial vehicles and aerospace.

Since its inception in 1905, SAE has been organizing and implementing various programmes that accord recognitions for outstanding engineering.

Prof Dr Mohd Sapuan described his appointment as a great recognition not only for himself but also UPM in particular.

“I am grateful for winning this prestigious award which has been very competitive,” he said.

This was because those chosen as SAE Fellow were officials from established automotive companies and lecturers who came mainly from the USA, Japan and other developed nations – hardly anyone from developing countries.

“I hope that this will spur people in the country to strive harder for success at the international level in any areas that they are involved in,” he said.

Previously, Prof Mohd Sapuan had received numerous recognitions and awards, including the SEARCA Regional Professorial Chair; ISESCO Science Award; Khwarizmi International Award; Kuala Lumpur Rotary Research Award; Alumni Award, University of Newcastle, Australia; UPM Vice-Chancellor Fellowship, UPM Putra Cemerlang Literary Award, UPM Outstanding Research Award, Malaysia Plastics and Rubber Institute Fellowship Award and FRIM printing award.

He also received the Five Star Role Model Supervisor recognition by UPM and Outstanding Reviewer by Elsevier, Netherlands. .– UPM
