A*STAR’S INSTITUTE FOR INFOCOMM RESEARCH RESEARCHER IS CONFERRED

Dr. Sun Sumei is the first Singaporean female to be conferred IEEE Fellowship and is recognised for achievements in Advanced Wireless Communications Systems.

Singapore, 19 January 2016 – Dr. Sun Sumei, a researcher from A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This is the first time a female Singaporean has been named as an IEEE Fellow. Dr, Sun is being recognized for her research in advanced wireless communications systems.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

Dr. Sun’s key research focus has been on advanced wireless communication systems since the 1990s. Dr. Sun has authored and co–authored more than two hundred technical papers in IEEE journals and conferences. Many of her inventions have been adopted by industry for application in 3G/4G cellular and high-throughput Wi-Fi systems. Her significant contributions to bridging theory and implementation, academia and industry, have also been recognized with the A*STAR Scientist-Entrepreneur Award in 2008, the Royal Society of Engineering’s Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in 2014, amongst others. Her current interest lies in cognitive communications for connected society as well as for machines and things, and 5G systems.

Dr Sun Sumei, Head of I2R’s Advanced Communication Technology Department said “Wireless communications have gone through many exciting developments over the last three decades and have significantly changed the way we connect with people, and acquire and share information. I am very happy to have had the opportunity be part of it, to research and innovate and have our technologies deployed by industry. I am pleased, honoured and humbled to be elevated to an IEEE Fellow. I also hope that this will encourage more of the young generation to join us for even more exciting development in wireless communication to connect not only people, but also things and machines, for a connected community and sustainable development.”

The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for advancing technology for humanity. Through its 400,000 members in 160 countries, the IEEE is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

Dedicated to the advancement of technology, the IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed more than 900 active industry standards. The association also sponsors or co-sponsors nearly 400 international technical conferences each year. Please visit www.ieee.org for more information about IEEE or the IEEE Fellow Program.
