News: Criticism over Trident 'secrecy'

Leading weapons experts and security think-tanks have accused the British government of withholding information needed to properly evaluate a multibillion-pound proposal to renew the country's fleet of nuclear submarines, Nature reports this week. Officials at the Ministry of Defence have rejected requests under the Freedom of Information Act that relate to relatively unsensitive information, and rebuffed an offer of assistance from the Royal Society. A leading nuclear-weapons adviser to the US government concludes that the lack of public consultation will make it impossible for the British government to make an informed decision on whether the country's Trident submarine fleet should be replaced.
