'An approach for Japanese learners of English' and 'Vocabulary in practice'

Japanese learners of English have suffered from an inability to become competent communicators despite their large vocabulary and good grammar. This paper details an approach used to overcome this. The 2nd paper is on a project which puts into practice the principles underlying vocabulary learning.

IMPROVING ADVANCED LEARNERS' COMMUNICATION SKILLS THROUGH PARAGRAPH READING AND WRITING

This study introduces a major problem advanced Japanese learners of English have and approach the author has done to help the students overcome the difficulty: method, achievements and challenges. Japanese learners of English have suffered from an inability to become competent communicators despite their large vocabulary and good grammar. This is mainly because their messages are not logical. To overcome the problem, the author utilized paragraph reading and writing.  The participants were 32 university students and the topic of the writing was something about Japanese culture.

VOCABULARY LEARNING THROUGH VOCABULARY SCRAPBOOK

This paper describes how the principles underlying vocabulary learning are put into practice in the project, the problems faced by the teachers and students in carrying out the project and the effectiveness of the project in improving students’ inventory of words and phrases. A survey carried out after the project was completed revealed the students’ positive reception towards the project – viewing it as a useful tool in learning and enriching their vocabulary.
