GIS and Poverty Mapping

This project from the Asian Institute of Technology, will enable policy makers in ASEAN countries to understand their country's poverty distribution and map them using GIS technology. They can then determine links between poverty and land use which will lead to the development of long term plans to alleviate poverty in the region.

Capacity Building in Poverty Mapping in the ASEAN Member Countries is an interesting project that utilizes both socio-economic data and GIS technology to look at geographical distribution of poverty and understand the determinants behind for these disparities. The project is sponsored by ASEAN Foundation under Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund targeting capacity development in 10 ASEAN countries. This project will enable policy makers in ASEAN countries to understand their country's poverty distribution and map them using GIS technology. They can then determine links between poverty and land use, infrastructure, urbanization, schools, etc, which will lead to the development of long term plans to alleviate poverty in the region.

Geoinformatics Center at the Asian Institute of Technology is dedicated to development and promotion of geospatial technologies; GIS, GPS and remote sensing in Asia-Pacific region. As an outreach center of AIT, it serves the region with short-term training, tailor-made training, research works and consulting works for clients including various international, regional and local agencies. During the year 2007, application oriented and local capacity building projects are implemented in more than 10 countries in the region with the collaboration of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, ASEAN Foundation and number of other donor agencies. Application of geospatial technologies for disaster risk reduction, environmental planning & management, education & healthcare, development planning can be highlighted as some of the main areas of involvement. Geoinformatics Center functions as the focal point of technology disseminating in the region for Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and for the last 10 years more than 1000 participants have been provided opportunities to advance their knowledge in remote sensing, GIS and related technologies.
