The Information Comunication Technology Centre (ICTC)

Brunei - The Information Comunication Technology Centre (ICTC), formerly known as Computer Services Centre, was formed in 1986 with the mission "to create and maintain an IT environment at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The Information Comunication Technology Centre (ICTC), formerly known as Computer Services Centre, was formed in 1986 with the mission "to create and maintain an IT environment at Universiti Brunei Darussalam that facilitates both global and local information access and exchange, to allow the strategic and effective deployment of IT to help the University improve its own campus-wide performance, to reach out into a new millennium, to efficiently achieve its academic, administrative and entrepreneurial objectives."

The Centre provides a comprehensive computing and networking infrastructure for the support of teaching and research functions of the University. The Centre also provides assistance in the purchase, maintenance and repair of all types of computing equipment.

FUNCTION:
A. Information Planning
Developing and updating computing guidelines, policies and information services in the University.
Conducting feasibility studies to meet the academic and administrative computing requirement.
Developing and carry out plans to integrate the Centre with the academic and administrative needs.

B. Academic Computing Support
Assisting academic community in the use of IT based resources in the University.
Providing software training, support and consultation.
Maintaining computer laboratories.
Co-operating with academic community in developing research systems.

C. Administrative Information System Support
Developing, implementing and maintaining information systems needed for the administration.
Providing administrative end-user support and consultation.
Promoting office automation.
Aligning information services with the overall structure of the University and integrate its different areas.

D. Software Development
Providing effective, reliable and secured application software services to the computing facilities in the University.
Developing, implementing and maintaining applications software to meet users’ specific needs.
Ensuring the integrity, availability and quality of computerised information systems which are crucial to the functioning of the University.

E. Networking
Managing Campus-wide network (UNet) and plan for its future expansion and upgrades.
Providing internal and global on-line, e-mail, internet and intranet facilities
Liaison with local and overseas network service providers for the upkeep of the network and global information access.

F. Operations & Maintenance
Make sure the efficient, safe and secure operation of the University’s IT facilities.
Co-ordination the maintenance of approved information and IT related teaching resources throughout University.
Develop contingency, security and recovery plans.
Suggesting technical standards for the implementation of University IT policies and to oversee adherence to these standards.
Assisting in the purchase of approved acquisition of hardware and software throughout the University.
Maintaining and upkeep the homepage and the intranet services of the University.

G. Continuing Education & Training
Providing training for users whenever necessary.
Providing users with support and guidance for IT facilities, including courses on various aspects of IT so as to achieve a fully IT literate University community.
Conducting IT related courses for the general public and government departments through continuing education program of the University.

H. Community Work & Consultancy
Promoting the usage of IT in the local community through seminars, product exhibitions and conducted visits to the Centre for public, schools and government departments.
Providing consultancy services for the local business community and government departments.

Administration and Academic Training
One of the major role of the centre is to promote IT literacy through training and seminars. The Centre provides training for the University administrative staff in all aspects of the use of information processing facilities either on regular or ad-hoc.

All departments in the University make use of computers for course development and research, for data storage, retrieval and analysis. The Centre also provide assistance to the academic staff in these areas of application.

Hardware and Software Maintenance
One of the daily task of the Centre is Hardware and Software Maintenance. The services provided by the Centre include the installation of hardware and software, repairs of hardware and recovery of lost data and corrupted software. The maintenance room located at the ground floor of the Centre is used for repairing and housing spare parts. The Centre also provides advice, guidance and technical manuals for users to facilitates their computing activity.
