The Center for Fire Science and Technology at Tokyo University of Science held the kick-off symposium for the global COE program Center for Education and Research on Advanced Fire Safety Science and Technology in East Asia on March 26, 2009 in Seoul, South Korea.

Today, East Asian countries have been developing rapidly. In big city, high-rise and large scale buildings have been constructed while in small local region, traditional construction method have been transformed drastically by the development of material, facility, construction machine and so on.

Newly made area (high-rise, underground, big scale complex), new material and usage will bring on new fire risk. In response to that, architectural fire protection design needs “change”, however some of recent fire events indicate that few change has been made and that means buildings which have potential fire risk will increase dramatically in East Asian countries.

For this reason, it is necessary that fire protection engineers in East Asian countries work together for the both side of research and education to establish fire safety countermeasure that can deal with newly made area, new material and usage.

For this purpose, Tokyo University of Science organized this symposium in Seoul, Korea. TUS invited fire protection engineers and professors from East Asian countries and national project on fire safety in their counties and new way of fire protection was discussed.

More than 170 participants from Japan, South Korea, China and other countries took part in this symposium that focused on the theme of mitigating fire damage and loss in East Asia. Experts explained the fire safety and prevention conditions in their respective countries and introduced fire safety – related projects.

There were lively discussions in which the participants shared their experiences and provided examples of fire safety. There was a clear sense that the international development of this program will continue.
