Horton, A. V. M. “Colonial Office Correspondence relating to Brunei ‘Destroyed under statute’ 1906-1934.” International Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies, 1, 2005 (Inaugural Issue): 1-43

In this paper A. V. M. Horton, a specialist on Brunei history scans the registers of correspondence relating to Brunei (1906-34) held in the National Archives at Kew, UK. An annotated checklist of documents is provided.

Dr Horton concluded that useful data can be yielded contributing to the history of this Malay Muslim sultanate; and that, in a case such as Brunei, where documentation is in short supply, no potential source of information should be neglected.

This exercise raises issues about the preservation of historical records, an undertaking no nation state should neglect for the sake of its history and heritage. Dr Horton offers proposals and suggestions for further research in this area of concern. This lengthy article is useful to the worldwide community of historians and archivists in general, firstly for the useful data that it features particularly useful for those dealing with Brunei, and secondly, more importantly to governments and other agencies that are responsible for the keeping of records to be reminded of the importance of the preservation of such documents.
