eCITRA 2010 showcases artworks from the land of the hornbills

Acting on the belief that institutions of learning must collaborate in developing higher eduation in the country, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) have co-organised the ‘Creativity, Innovation, Technology and Research in the Arts’ Exhibition or eCITRA 2010.

The exhibition, held at the Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Art Gallery showcased 20 artworks of lecturers and students of UNIMAS and was launched by the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS, Prof. Dr. Khairuddin Ab Hamid today.

In his speech at the launching of the exhibition, Prof. Dr. Khairuddin said that art is a part of the culture of any society and that it is a representation of the uniqueness of the environment, the rich natural resources, the socio-cultural background and the economy of a society that needs to be appreciated and protected.

“This shows that just as scientists, technocrats and others are important in shaping and developing a society so too are the arts, which play a specific and important role in shaping and developing a society,” he said.

Sharing the same aspirations, the Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Aplied Arts, (FSGK) UNIMAS, Dr. Hasnizam Abdul Wahid said that after the last FSGK Exhibition at the Sabah Art Gallery in 2007, this opportunity to hold an exhibition in USM was an excellent one. It provides scholars, activists and art critics the opportunity to view the artworks from an academic and research perspective.

“From the time FSGK was set up, art in all the forms of technological application has been the thrust in the process of teaching and learning as well as in research.”

“Thus, we at FSGK UNIMAS believe that basic skills or the common practise of ‘paper and pencil’ will help to ensure that the identity and works of an artist has greater integrity and is in keeping with the passage of time,” he said.

Also present at the launching were the Director of the Tuanku Fauziah Museum and Art Gallery, Assoc. Prof. Hasnul Jamal Saidon who was representing the Vice-Chancellor; representatives of the co-sponsors, Petronas and MAS Kargo as well as students from Perkumpulan Anak-Anak Sarawak USM (PERKASA).

The eCitra 2010 Exhibition is the third project under the ‘Tautan Rentas Samudera USM-UNIMAS-UMS’ Programme scheduled to be held from 10 July 2010 till 7 August 2010. It is open to the public from 9am-6pm daily, except on Mondays.
