Singapore SME Ties-Up With A*STAR to Commercialise ‘Black Box’ Platform and Enter US$3 Billion Global DVR Market

KAI Square is the software and hardware vendor for local public bus fleet operators' in-vehicle surveillance system and central management system. The company has teamed up with A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), to provide an integrated solution targeted to benefit fleet operators.

Local SME, KAI Square Pte Ltd (KAI Square) makes a move to enter into the US$3 billion global [1] digital video recording (DVR) and security surveillance market. The SME recently signed a licensing agreement with the marketing and commercialisation arm of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (Exploit Technologies), to commercialise a “black box” [2] platform for automobiles.

KAI Square is the software and hardware vendor for local public bus fleet operators' in-vehicle surveillance system and central management system. The company has teamed up with A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), to provide an integrated solution targeted to benefit fleet operators.

DSI’s “black box” platform, called the In-Vehicle Event Management System (IVEMS), is an advanced, multi-channel, mobile digital wireless-enabled video surveillance system. It makes use of proprietary firmware design and software algorithms to ensure video data integrity and system reliability. IVEMS is capable of recording ‘24/7’ and can store up to 30 days of video surveillance data.

The IVEMs complements KAI Square’s central management portal, Juzz4logistics, an award-winning, total turnkey solution for real-time surveillance needs in the logistics and transportation industries. This service rides on the cutting-edge mobile internet technology to help fleet operators effectively manage their fleet of vehicles through the use of real-time, information transfer. When coupled with IVEMS, KAI Square’s Juzz4Logistics promises to deliver, to the fleet operators, the highest standards of communication between the fleet operators' control centres and their vehicles.

“KAI Square has been looking for suitable front end devices to complement its advanced central management portal and DSI’s IVEMS, will offer more functionalities and help to cut short integration efforts required at our side, thus, saving costs in the long run,” added Dr. Neo Shi Yong, Chief Executive Officer of KAI Square.

“IVEMS stands out as it is able to store more data, making it suitable for installation in automobiles for 24/7 video surveillance over a longer period of time. This synergistic tie-up would be beneficial to both parties and perhaps give us a foothold into the DVR market.” said Dr Chang Kuan Teck, Deputy Executive Director (Industry) for Data Storage Institute.

Aside from the licensing agreement, Exploit Technologies, had also gap-funded this collaboration between KAI Square and DSI. “A*STAR had a market ready technology, while KAI Square, on the other hand, was looking for a customised technology to complement its central management portal,” explained Mr Philip Lim, Chief Executive Officer of Exploit Technologies. “Exploit Technologies came into the picture as the catalyst to help bridge this gap and facilitated the commercial adoption of A*STAR’s technology.”

Juzz4logistics with IVEMS is targeted to be available in the market in late 2011.

[2]Black box is a generic term used to describe the computerised flight data recorders carried by modern commercial aircraft. The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) is a miniaturised computer system which tracks a variety of data regarding the flight of the plane, such as airspeed, position, and altitude. This device is typically used in conjunction with a second black box known as the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which documents radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit, such as the pilots' voices and engine noises. In the event of a mishap, the information stored in these black boxes can be used to help determine the cause of the accident.
