GIS Day Unlock Opportunities to Advance GIS system

The recently held 2011 Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Day, held at Universiti Putra Malaysia, has allowed opportunities for professional groups within the government sector, private sector as well as the academic experts to share ideas and expertise to further advance the GIS system.

Visitors being briefed on the product by one of the participating agencies.

The advisor of Malaysian Remote Sensing & GIS Society Student Chapter (MRSGISSC), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Rashid Mohamed Shariff said the program aims to update the new applications in the GIS system to run in accordance the relevant policy.

"In addition, the program is aimed at identifying the impact of GIS systems to businesses, individuals and communities in favour to determine the direction of the country in expanding the use of this system," he said at the opening.

Among the program activities include a public lecture entitled ‘GIS for 1 Malaysia’ by the advisor of Malaysian Remote Sensing & GIS Society Student Chapter (MRSGISSC) and ‘Role of Private Industries in Nurturing 1 Malaysia Concept’ by the Managing Director of Geomatics Technology, Mohaizi Mohamad.

Two presentations by representatives from the Science and Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE), Geo Spatial Solutions Sdn Bhd dan Hydro Navigation, also made the program tentative.

There are also exhibits from other agencies as co-organizer of this program such as the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), SIRIM Berhad, SIRIM Berhad, dan Hydro Navigation.

GIS is a system to receive, store, analyze, manage and present data related to a location that can be used in the field of archeology, geography, cartography, landscape design and many more.
