It was a 100 percent victory for Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at the 22nd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX). The exhibition, held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre also saw USM taking home four special awards.

The Special Awards received include the ITEX 2011 Best Invention Award by Prof. Hanafi Ismail, from the School Of Materials & Mineral Resources Engineering through his research ‘1Plus 1 - From Rubber Wastes into 2 Novel Products and D-Gloves’; International Federation of Inventor’s Association IFIA Cup Best Woman Inventor by Prof. Chan Lai Keng from the School of Biological Sciences through her research titled ‘Compact Versatile Plant Cell Culture Tank’; and the Taiwan Special Award by Assoc. Prof. Gam Lay Harn from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences through the research titled ‘Analysis Method For Differentiating The Porcine and Bovine Gelatine Source in Candies’. Each of them also received the gold medal for their research.

The creativity of Assoc. Prof. Azizi Bahauddin from the School of Housing, Building and Planning, enabled USM to win the Best Exhibition Booth Award.

USM won 7 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze awards from the 17 products that were exhibited.

The other gold medals won in the competition were through Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tang Thean Hock from the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (Toothbrush with Bristles In an Isosceles Configuration), Assoc. Prof. Azura A Rashid from School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering (D-Gloves), Assoc. Prof. Kamal Zuhairi Zamli from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (mGTWay) and Prof. Meor Othman Hamzah from the School of Civil Engineering (Dynamic Stripping Machine).

Researchers from 14 countries participated in the 22nd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition, held from 20-22 May 2011.
