The younger generation now is also known as ‘the zapping generation'; they are impatient, hungry for information and accustomed to digital media. They have neither the time nor patience to read and digest large amounts of information. Most of them want information in an easy, convenient and appealing way. Malaysia with its diversity of cultures and races is populated with zapping generations who are less interested in learning about national customs and cultures. Needless to say, everyone has a need for information, communication and entertainment. So a preliminary survey on how best to deliver information to the zapping generation suggest that information delivery should be made attractive, creative, easier to understand, entertaining, simple, suitable for different age groups, cheap to get/produce, humorous and effective. In other words, information should be entertaining (infortainment).
In order to disseminate cost effective Malay cultural infortainment, a cost effective production approach was established, with the following aspects:
- 2D animation
- Vector art does not require artistic skills
- Inclusion of a key character
- Utilizing existing skills and technologies
- Low production cost, min 2 manpower
- Quick production cycle
- Small file size
The above aspects resulted in an object called LidiMan. Market survey showed that LidiMan was highly effective and entertaining in disseminating cultural infotainment (100% agreement). It has potential in education, entertainment, tourism and advertisement.
