UUM researchers invent intelligent, mobile systems for farmers and teachers

FuzzyXPest is an intelligent mobile Pest Management System that enables farmers to forecast the pest activity level before it can cause too much damage to the rice field. FuzzyXteem a similar advisory system which enables teachers to measure students academic self esteem using real time computation.

Prognosis becomes easier and faster when information is delivered in real time. Managing and monitoring is even more effective when is can be done through the internet or GPRS mobile phones. By properly organising and analyzing information, users will be able to plan, improve yields, self-esteem and much more.

Universiti Utara Malaysia's real time FuzzyX integrates fuzzy logic technique with an expert system to provide forecasting and explanation facilities. UUM's software merges its own experience and knowledge with their clients’ expertise. This resulted in a prognosis system that will help users manage, monitor and improve the productivity of their organisation.

Two functional systems known namely FuzzyXPest and FuzzyXteem have been developed each for the agricultural and educational sectors.

FuzzyXPest is an intelligent mobile Pest Management System that enables users, particularly farmers and farming organisations involved in rice management, to forecast the type of pest and its activity level which can cause much damage to the rice field.

This is important because early treatment or action can be applied before damage is made to the rice field and plant becomes worse. In addition, FuzzyXPest also provides treatment control and prevention steps. The system has been verified by agricultural entomologist and has proved beneficial to the organizations involved in rice management especially farmers.

Farmers and agriculture representatives have direct access to information which helps facilitate the decision making process, leading to better management of rice fields and in essence improving the quality and quantity of rice production.

FuzzyXteem is an intelligent mobile advisory system that enables users, particularly teachers, counselors or parents to measure students'self esteem at an early age using real time computation. FuzzyXteem handles the consultation sessions, automatically evaluates Behavioral Academic Academic Self-Esteem (BASE) factors and helps the user diagnoses their students' levels of academic self esteem in 3 ratings: low; moderate or high.

FuzzyXteem is also able to explain and describe how the conclusion was derived. The system has been successfullly tested and conforms to the BASE factor rating scale and sub-scores. FuzzyXteem can be used as a decision making tool in activities leading to improving a person's self esteem, and indirectly increasing the individual's productivity. The same system's functions can be applied to business organisations for improving the organisation's performance.

FuzzyXPest and FuzzyXteem are easy to use, cheap, support both web-based and mobile technologies and can easily be reused in other domains and applications. Being able to both closely monitor and manage our applications in real time allows us not only ensure dependable and integrated service for our clients, but to obtain the more cost effective use of our systems
