A*STAR’S Institute for Infocomm Research Principal Scientist is conferred 2014 IEEE Fellowship

Dr. Li Haizhou is recognised for his achievements in speech and language technology. As a pioneer in human language technology for Asian languages, Dr. Li has made outstanding contributions in transforming the interface of mobile applications and breaking down the language barriers for Asian society.

Singapore, 19 December 2013 - Dr. Li Haizhou, a Principal Scientist from A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is being recognised for his leadership in multilingual, speaker and language recognition research and development. As a pioneer in human language technology for Asian languages, Dr. Li has made outstanding contributions in transforming the interface of mobile applications and breaking down the language barriers for Asian society.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest, and Dr. Li is among the 293 individuals worldwide who have been elevated to Fellow for 2014. This highest grade of membership is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement.

Dr. Li is known for his “Bag-of-Sounds” invention for state-of-the art speaker and language recognition technology, and for his technical contributions to many award-winning products and deployments, which include Lernout & Hauspie's Speech-Pen-Keyboard Text Entry Solution for Asian languages (1999), TELEFIQS voice-automated call centre service in Singapore’s Changi International Airport (2001), voiceprint engine for Lenovo A586 smartphone (2012), and Baidu Music Search (2013).

Dr. Li is currently a Senior Editor of IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing (2013-2015), a Member of IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee (2013-2015), the Vice President of the International Speech Communication Association (2013-2014), and the President-Elect of Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (2013-2014).

Dr. Li Haizhou was the recipient of the National Infocomm Awards 2002 in Singapore, Nokia Visiting Professor Award 2009 in Finland, Institute of Engineering Singapore Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award 2013, and the President's Technology Award 2013 in Singapore.
