The latest QS World University Rankings was released on 16th September 2014 which showed that Univesity of Malaya has moved up 16 positions from 167 in 2013 to 151 in 2014. This is the best UM has achieved since QS first published a ranking of the world’s universities (see Figure 1).

Since first being compiled in 2004, the QS WUR has expanded to feature 863 tertiary institutions around the world out of over 3,000 assessed. The rankings compare these top universities based on six indicators, namely academic reputation (40% weightage based on 63,676 academic responses), employer reputation (10%), student-to-faculty ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), International faculty ratio (5%) & international student ratio (5%). Figure 2 shows a summary of the results achieved by Univesity of Malaya with an overall score of 61.0.

Univesity of Malaya has improved by 48% in citations per faculty, a criteria which is objective and where the Univesity of Malaya Research Community can be proud of. This gain is by far the largest among the QS indicators. However, there is still much room for advancement since the high impact scientific and technological research is a key driver of leadership in the QS World University Rankings. Figure 3 displays the faculty area results based on subject disciplines.

According to Bernama News, Malaysian universities gained ground in this year’s QS WUR, with three being included in the top 300 (UM, UKM, UTM).The New Straits Times (17 September) reported that Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh was proud of the outcome and congratulated the universities for their achievements.

On behalf of the University of Malaya Research Community, High Impact Research (HIR) would like to thank Prof. Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) & Chairman, University Malaya Rankings Committee, for compiling and analysing the 2014 data and helping University of Malaya to this ranking achievement.
