Fusionopolis Two: Accelerating Cross-Disciplinary Innovation, Discovery and Collaboration In One-North

Singapore— Fusionopolis Two, the latest addition to one-north, an R&D hub and icon of Singapore’s knowledge economy masterplanned and developed by JTC, was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today.

With its state-of-the art facilities at the heart of one-north’s Fusionopolis cluster, the opening of the $450 million Fusionopolis Two provides co-location opportunities for research, innovation and enterprise, aimed at sparking interdisciplinary collaborations amongst the public sector and with private sector players. This ecosystem to support knowledge creation in science and technology will lead to new areas of economic growth for Singapore.

“The physical elements of Fusionopolis go beyond just being conducive for collisions, collaborations and co-innovations among and between the collocated researchers from both the public and private sectors; more importantly, it is to catalyse a further shift in cooperative and collaborative culture. We will also work with our partners in the universities, hospitals and the public and private sector to bring about a similar change in the wider research community. SG50 reminds us that we are where we are today because of our people and the collective will to want to progress and improve our lives. When we can work well together, there are really no problems that we cannot solve and no challenges that we cannot overcome. Collectively, we will realise our Smart Nation vision and there will be much for us to celebrate at SG100,” said Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).

“We welcome A*STAR’s science and engineering research institutes at Fusionopolis Two. The anchoring of these new clusters further enhances the value proposition of one-north, as a bedrock of innovation,” said Mr Png Cheong Boon, CEO of JTC.

Driving Co-Innovation and R&D at Fusionopolis and one-north

The opening of Fusionopolis Two comes against the backdrop of the highest Gross Domestic Expenditure in R&D (GERD) recorded, at S$7.6 billion in 2013. 2013 also saw the highest level of RSE jobs created since 2005. Of the 1,800 new RSE jobs created in 2013, 1,100 were in the private sector. These results reflect the continuing development and growing stature of Singapore’s R&D landscape.

Anchored at Fusionopolis Two are the following A*STAR science and engineering research institutes: the Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute of Microelectronics (IME), Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), and the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).

Already located at Fusionopolis One are the Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R) and the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC). Together, these two research institutes under A*STAR have established 19 joint labs with industry since they were located at Fusionopolis in 2008.

A*STAR’s industry partner Applied Materials is slated to set up a second joint lab with A*STAR at Fusionopolis Two.

The co-location of these institutes brings together research capabilities such as data analytics, computational sciences, social and cognitive computing analytics, advanced materials, silicon photonics, future data centre storage technologies and nanofabrication, among others.

The new research space has been designed and developed by JTC according to A*STAR’s research needs, adhering to stringent requirements for cleanroom facilities to be vibration-sensitive and pollutant-free. The layout has also been designed to foster greater interaction and deepen scientific collaborations through the use of integrated and shared facilities.

The network of A*STAR’s research institutes and other public and private research bodies at Fusionopolis, as well as the robust biomedical sciences expertise built up at Biopolis, are emblematic of the Government’s commitment to transform Singapore into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, where both public and private sectors can work closely to create impactful economic and societal outcomes for Singapore.

one-north: An Exciting Place of Vision and Inspiration

Over the last 15 years, one-north has grown in stature as an icon of Singapore’s knowledge economy that is anchored by dynamic growth clusters at Fusionopolis, Biopolis and Mediapolis, and uniquely blended with residential, lifestyle and educational spaces. one-north is also home to JTC LaunchPad @ one-north, a vibrant start-up cluster comprising key players of the entrepreneurship community such as accelerators, incubators, start-ups, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.

Today, this creative milieu of research, innovation and test-bedding is home to some 250 leading companies and global institutions, five institutes of higher learning and corporate universities, 41 incubators with over 600 start-ups, 16 world-class public research institutes, and over 35,000 talent.
