Smart phone application, called ‘Salam Halal KL’, that looks for halal restaurants developed by a student in Malaysia

A student of Universiti Putra Malaysia, has succeeded in creating a smart phone application using a GPS Augmented Reality technology to look for halal restaurants within the vicinity of a consumer’s living area.

SERDANG – Muhammad Syukri Metussin, a student of Halal Research Institute (IPPH), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has succeeded in creating a smart phone application, called ‘Salam Halal KL’ using ‘Live AR View’ which is a GPS Augmented Reality (AR) technology in a camera device to look for halal restaurants within the vicinity of a consumer’s living area.

He said ‘Salam Halal KL’ which came complete with innovative features would allow consumers to search for the nearest restaurants within their vicinity which had been certified halal by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) to appear “live” on the screens of their smart phones.

“The use of AR technology is the first in the world, equipped with social network characteristics which enable consumers to share the pictures of the food they ordered at the restaurant,” he said.

Muhammad Syukri, who is a Master of Science student at IPPH, was aided by IPPH head of Policy Laboratory and Halal Management, Associate Prof. Dr. Nurdeng Deuraseh and Associate Professor Dr Rodziah Atan who is a Lecturer at UPM’s Science Computer and Information Technology Faculty.

He added that the application also gave an assurance that the food served is halal as certified by JAKIM.

“Although JAKIM has made it compulsory for food outlets to display their respective halal certificates, there are traders out there who falsify the halal certificates for quick bucks. But with this application, Muslim consumers will have no problem in looking for halal outlets or eateries,” he said.

The application can be downloaded for free at Google Playstore. However, at the moment, this application is only limited to areas in Kuala Lumpur as planning is underway to expand its usage nationwide and globally. – UPM.
