Two Weeks Left to Submit Nominations for MIT Technology Review’s Regional ‘Innovators Under 35’ List

MIT Technology Review calls for nominations from innovators in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan for the regional 2017 Innovators Under 35 (TR35) list.

Since 1999, MIT Technology Review has honoured the young innovators whose inventions and research we find most exciting. The regional list recognizes technologists and scientists, all under the age of 35 whose work spans biomedicine, computing, communications, energy, materials, internet, transportation, and is changing our world. In all, 30 regional Innovators in Asia have been named in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The 10 selected innovators for 2017 will present a three-minute elevator pitch at EmTech Asia 2017, gaining access to an audience of over 700 accomplished innovators and investors. They also automatically become finalists for the global 35 Innovators Under 35 (TR35) list.

Majid Ebrahimi Warkiani, who made it to the 2016 list, received a research grant for his work on novel systems for early cancer diagnosis, post receiving recognition as a TR35 listee. “I am a scientist and also a lecturer at University of New South Wales. We are trying to develop new systems for early cancer diagnosis and also treatment of patients who have cancer. Being a TR35 listee is an honour and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The award has helped me progress much faster in my academic career, in addition to securing more funding for my research.”

For another 2016 listee, Javier Gomez Fernandez, Assistant Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design, being recognized was special because it raised awareness of their innovation to a broader community. Fernandez says, “I develop new materials that are inspired by nature and made using the same components as nature. The outreach of TR35 enabled many people to learn about our work. Because of this outreach, several people from industrial and academic environments have approached us looking to collaborate and support our work. TR35 is a great opportunity to publicize your work and establish new collaborations.”

Nominees must be under the age of 35 as of 1 October 2017. They must be citizens of (or work/study in) one of the following countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. Submit your nominations now!
