National Seminar on Radioactive Waste Inventory and Acceptance Criteria

MINT Waste Management Center (WMC) is responsible for managing radioactive waste within Malaysia. For an effective radioactive waste management, the importance of waste inventory is of prime concern; whether it is waste generator, waste management agency or regulatory authority.

Background

Radioactive materials are used in various fields to the benefit of mankind. Malaysia produces relatively small amounts of radioactive waste from medical, industrial, educational and research activities involving the use of radioactive materials. Currently MINT Waste Management Center (WMC) is given the responsibility for managing radioactive waste within the country for processing and storage.

For an effective radioactive waste management, the importance of waste inventory is of prime concern; whether it is waste generator, waste management agency or regulatory authority. The waste inventory provides basic information to plan, build and operate a comprehensive waste management system. Waste acceptance criteria (WAC) are the conditions imposed on a waste producer by the regulator and/or operator of a waste handling, transportation, storage, processing and/or disposal service. The WAC usually specify such things as the required physical form of the waste, maximum levels of radioactivity, packaging requirement, etc as well as what wastes are excluded from their service.

A total of 20 papers are scheduled in this 2 day seminar to discuss the issues on waste inventory and acceptance criteria. There will be 4 keynote addresses, which will be presented by leading speakers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and 16 papers will be delivered by local speakers covering the following aspects:

- Waste Acceptance Criteria
- National Inventory
- Licensing & regulation
- Issues on Institutional & TENORM Waste
- Borehole disposal technology

There will be a panel discussion at the end of each day where the speakers and participants will discuss issues on the presented topics for the day.

OBJECTIVES
-To develop a comprehensive national inventory for radioactive waste
- To discuss the proposed 'waste acceptance criteria'
- To discuss issues related to management of institutional and TENORM waste and methods to resolve the problems
- To strengthen networking among professional in the field of radioactive waste management
- to keep abreast on the development of licensing and regulation
- To disseminate the latest information on the borehole disposal technology

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The seminar is essential for all those interested in Radioactive Waste Management including: Waste generators, scientists, managers, policy makers, legislators, local enforcement agencies, academicians, professionals and students.
