The UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum & Filipiniana Center, the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the Alliance Française de Manille and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia will be hosting Asia, Europe and Impressionism from 24 to 26 November 2006 at the UPVM and Instituto Cervantes in Manila. Speakers and participants comprise of experts, scholars and professionals from cultural and academic institutions in the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Hungary, France, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands.

This activity is in line with the Fabian de la Rosa (1869-1938) Retrospective Exhibition, which opened on 7 September 2006 at the Kawilihan Gallery of UPVM. Fabian de la Rosa, the first Filipino Director of the UP School of Fine Arts, might have helped spread the Impressionist style and technique in the country and the Asian region through his incipient technique of realism.

Asia, Europe and Impressionism: International Workshop on Impressionism and Creativity from the Asian Perspective aims to examine the endurance and popularity of Impressionism and its persistence in both Asia and Europe. Specifically the forum seek to discuss its withstanding popularity and the continuing tradition of this form of painting as a collective means of interaction between the East and the West, considering the aspects of cultural exchange, politics and power relations, the art market and education. Moreover, it also seeks to determine its science of color, specifically among the works of Filipino Impressionists.

Registration forms are available at the venues, or could be downloaded from www.vargasmuseum.org. Workshop fee for early registrants is Php3,500 before 11 November 2006, after which, the fee is Php5,000. Interested parties may also register at the venues. This is inclusive of the workshop kit and handouts, lunch and coffee during the workshop, and tour transportation.

The project is supported by the Annual Asia-Europe Workshop Series 2006/2007 of the Asia-Europe Foundation and the European Alliance for Asian Studies, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
