Asian Cinematic Practice - Towards an Alternative Paradigm

The workshop brings together leading scholars of Asian cinemas to discuss and propose ideas of an Asian cinema paradigm and its viability as a model vis-à-vis Hollywood.

Is there an Asian cinema? How does one discern “Asian-ness” in Asian film? Does the universal language of film preclude a language of cultural idiosyncrasy or uniqueness underwritten by the cultural backgrounds, practices and philosophies of the filmmakers involved? What is the distinctiveness of the approaches adopted by Asian filmmakers in telling stories on film?

Like the concept of the Orient, Asia is too much of an abstraction created from the history of imperialism and colonialism. Yet, Asia has emerged into a postcolonial and postmodern environment, forging ahead in creating industrialized, postmodern communities with distinctive film and media cultures.

This workshop assumes that there is such a thing as an intrinsically Asian cinema, one which could also exist and function within a transnational, transcultural, heterogeneous and hybrid realm of world cinematic cultures.
