Japanese Popular Culture in Asia

Young people from Shanghai to Singapore copy the latest trends in fashion, food, music, TV, and film from Tokyo. What makes Japanese popular so appealing to these young people?

Japanese popular culture has become an increasingly important part of life for young people living in Asia's wealthy cities. How does consumption of Japanese popular culture shape the values and lifestyles of young people in Asia? Is there a growing pan-Asian popular culture driven by Japan? Lynne Nakano will explore the context in which Japanese popular culture has attained high status among Asia's youth and consider the implications of its widespread consumption. Head of Japanese studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lynne Nakano also directs the program of Gender Studies. Her research interests include gender roles, marriage, self-identity, and she has written extensively on welfare, volunteerism and social change in Japan. Professor Nakano obtained her M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Yale University.
