Training Workshop on Forest Biodiversity – Conservation and Management of Forest Genetic Resources
KL, Malaysia : The training workshop aims to provide a common background to young scientists already working on forest biodiversity particularly in the Asia Pacific region and will address the urgent needs and challenges of biodiversity and forest genetic resource management in forest production systems.
A one-week training workshop on forest biodiversity with focus on forest genetic resources conservation and management will be held in June 2007. This 2007 workshop is supported by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) in collaboration with Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Bioversity International (Bioversity) and Asia Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme (AFPORGEN)
The training workshop aims to provide a common background to young scientists already working on forest biodiversity particularly in the Asia Pacific region and will address the urgent needs and challenges of biodiversity and forest genetic resource management in forest production systems.
The one -week training workshop will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 11 to 16 June 2007 and the medium of instruction will be in English. The topics covered include: (i) Forest biodiversity; (ii) Genetic diversity; (iii) Evolutionary genetics in forest tree populations; (iv) Spatial pattern of genetic diversity and its sampling and (v) In situ and ex situ conservation. Lectures will be given by eminent scientists from the region. Hands on laboratory training on applications of molecular markers to genetic diversity will be included.
Application Criteria
• Researchers from one of the countries in the list given below;
• A minimum of M.Sc. degree in forestry or related fields;
• Technical background and experience in the relevant area;
• Documented increasing responsibility in the relevant area, research or management in
the country concerned;
• Good knowledge of English;
• Maximum age of 40 years;
The costs of travel, accommodation, meals and training materials will be covered for one participant each from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand. Only the local cost (excluding travel) for a limited number of other participants will be supported. Others interested are welcome, but have to find their own support to attend.
