China, Japan and Regional Leadership in East Asia

University of Leeds, UK - This research workshop brings together a number of experts on East Asia , China and Japan to discuss among other issues, how we may conceive regional leadership itself.

East Asia as an increasingly prominent region in the international system. It has also become a more coherent entity from strengthening developments in regionalism and regionalisation. Understanding how the region is, or will most likely be 'led' by a particular power is important. This in turn should be considered in terms of ‘governing' the East Asia region, and ensuing regional governance structures being constructed by this process. China and Japan as the stand-out dominant powers in the region. Will a singular regional leader or hegemon emerge or a co-leadership governance structure? Or will China and Japan simply work to cancel out the other's bids for leadership, and thus ensure that no clear leadership structure is formed? This research workshop brings together a number of experts on East Asia , China and Japan to discuss these issues, including how we may conceive regional leadership itself.

The research workshop is the initial phase activity in the development of a bigger research project WREAC hopes to establish on the theme of China , Japan and Regional Leadership in East Asia. The main purpose of the workshop is therefore to generate discussion amongst expert scholars that will help us further define both the key relevant issues and the principle aims and objectives of the research project overall. An edited text will be produced based on the presented papers.
